What can you do to be happy and successful?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven if I didn\u2019t know what to do, [I] just had to begin. You\u2019ll only get the idea once you start . . . you have to act first before inspiration will hit, you don\u2019t wait for inspiration and then act, or you\u2019re never going to act.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filmmaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Rodriguez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Rodriguez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dove in and found his inspiration as he made his first film El Mariachi (grossing $2 million against $7000 budget). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can we do with our existing resources? How to stretch?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use resources you have in less conventional ways<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine different identities to approach the problem. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amasse eclectic experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change own expectations <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring creativity into routines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nFeature the few assets you have. Take advantage of your disadvantage. Creatively use the resources that you do have by asking 1) can it be broken down further, 2) does the description of the subpart imply a use. 3) Work harder and smarter than anyone else around you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not resources but resourcefulness that makes the difference. As a startup founder when you don\u2019t have the capital or large teams to deliver your vision. What can you do? Make the most of your existing product and relationships. Ask for advice and feedback. Based on personal experience, I can say that this strategy has helped me gain access to customers, money and team members. I enjoyed reading the many stories and research in Stretch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some practical suggestions\/exercises to stretch. Sonenshein says, \u201cthe key to success is not having more &#8211; it\u2019s stretching\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find sleeping beauty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; what personal resources have been shelved for years? Identify potential ways the dormant resources can help advance an objective. One action I can take to immediately revive it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backward looking plan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; act and then reflect. Instead of making grand plans that cause \u2018analysis paralysis\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn trash into treasure<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; find better use of unused things. Mobilise people to do something new. Look around your house for things that can be put to better use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just Say No<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; stop taking on more resources and be creative with what you have.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go explore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; read something different, learn something new, have lunch with someone from a different industry, travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a break<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; rotate between difficult and mindless work, walk as part of a daily ritual, go on the clock to limit the amount of time spent on tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appreciate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; gratitude in the present helps prioritise the future. So write your gratitude journal daily listing three things that you are grateful for.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>The key to stretching is to learn by doing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen we plan, we\u2019re not acting but delaying our actions and speculating about a future that may or may not exist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like while exercising, you can cause injury by stretching excessively. Too much of a good thing can turn out to be bad. Here are some injuries from over-stretching.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning into a cheapskate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wandering to nowhere<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaping without learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being cursed by high expectations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making toxic mixtures that might be novel but not useful<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n\u201cThe road to stretching starts with a simple but significant shift in mindset\u2014giving up the belief that having more resources = getting better results and replacing it with the conviction that a<\/span><b><i>better use of resources = getting better results<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This change in mindset takes us away from a dehumanizing rat race for resources that is impossible to win and provides us with a way to make do with and magnify what we already have.\u201d says Prof. Sonenshein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So give up the chase and stretch the resources you have!
