{"id":668,"date":"2018-11-28T22:33:25","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T22:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joysyjohn.com?p=668"},"modified":"2018-11-28T23:35:07","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T23:35:07","slug":"false-dichotomies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joysyjohn.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/28\/false-dichotomies\/","title":{"rendered":"False Dichotomies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the business world, we often hear these false dichotomies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profit vs sustainability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work vs life<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine vs human<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly in the education sector, we hear these debates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledge vs skills <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attainment vs character<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistency vs creativity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These false dilemmas lead to polarisation. We need to move away from black and white thinking to shades of grey. We need to move from \u2018either-or\u2019 reasoning to \u2018and\u2019 reasoning. What hybrid models could work? How can we change mindsets and think of a new paradigm that unites rather than divides?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Human + Machine + Better Processes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is what is needed to bring about transformation in life and work. Robots will not replace workers. Teachers will not be replaced but assisted by technology. We can improve learning for all by focusing on what makes us human. Schools need to teach creativity, communication and critical thinking alongside building character, resilience and well-being. And all these skills can be developed while still building a broad knowledge base through academic subjects taught in a multi-disciplinary approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we need to change our mindset?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-670 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/joysyjohn.comwp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ying-yang.png\" alt=\"ying yang\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joysyjohn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ying-yang.png 225w, https:\/\/joysyjohn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ying-yang-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (&#8220;dark-bright&#8221;, &#8220;negative-positive&#8221;) describes how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The false dilemmas at work and in education mentioned above are indeed mutually reinforcing &#8211; a more sustainable future will lead to better profits, a purposeful life will lead to better more fulfilling work, more efficient and personalised knowledge acquisition will lead to better skills where knowledge can be applied to solve real world problems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research tells us that by building grit, character and resilience, students get better exam results and go on to do better in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The way forward<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Create awareness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: about these false dilemmas and empower teachers, parents, and learners to forge their way forward with a hybrid model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Challenge assumptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: rather than following the widely accepted norms, we need to have the confidence to challenge the status quo. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Experiment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: we don\u2019t know all the answers to how we can make these hybrid models work but there are pockets of innovation and evidence.
